Vergers

Vergers have an important role in upholding the dignity of worship in the Cathedral, caring for its security and welcoming all who enter it. We play an important part in ensuring the proper functioning of the Cathedral as a place of worship and for the many other roles and activities which it serves.

Responsibilities include participation in the Cathedral Services, security, including the locking-up routines. Involvement in Health and Safety matters, in setting up of furniture and equipment for special events and restoration afterwards, as you are physically able, and the maintenance of good order within the Cathedral in the context of a ministry of welcome.

At times you may be asked to act as site supervisor during events and as point of contact for event organisers prior to, and during the events. Many of these events take place in the evenings and may involve resetting the Cathedral after the event has finished, ready for the next day’s Morning Prayer.

You may also be called upon to perform such other duties as are reasonably required by the Dean/Precentor, or their deputy, when necessary.
