Wellington Cathedral of St Paul Health and Safety documentation for venue users.
+ Statement of Intent
Wellington Cathedral of St Paul believes that an effective Health and Safety management system is the key to a successful organization; ethically, morally, spiritually, legally and financially. Through our active commitment to legislation compliance and most importantly, ensuring our workers and Church are safe, we will continuously look for opportunities to improve our performance and system whilst still following our Church values.
We actively promote improvement through ensuring our staff and Management are equally committed, involved and supportive of our Health and Safety practices.
To achieve this we will ensure all workers and visitors are:
- Working together; taking reasonably practicable steps to ensure that any significant risks or hazards to workers and visitors are minimised, and workers and visitors are protected where elimination is impracticable.
- Involved in identifying and controlling new and existing hazards and regularly monitoring these hazards within our facilities.
- Informed about accident and emergency procedures.
- Aware of their responsibilities to themselves, their fellow workers and the general public.
- Utilising the systems in place to record all incidents, near misses or injury.
- Promoting the provision of advice, information, education and training in relation to workplace health and safety.
+ Verbal Evacuation Notice
To be read aloud at any public event where Cathedral Event Staff are present.
Should the fire alarm sound during tonight’s performance, we ask that you leave the building through any of the marked exits in a calm and orderly fashion. Please offer assistance to those who require it. Do not re-enter the building until an all-clear has been issued by the fire service and cathedral staff.
In the event of an earthquake please drop, cover and hold. The cathedral staff will determine if an evacuation is necessary and will provide clear instructions.
The assembly zones for both fire and earthquake evacuation are the Loaves and Fishes carpark and at the bus stop on Molesworth Street.
+ Emergency Procedures
+ Guidelines for use of individual rooms in the cathedral
This risk assessment is provided to give general guidance of the hazards and risks in Wellington Cathedral of St Paul. These warnings may apply to members of the public, staff, contractors, and anyone else within the Cathedral’s space. The guidelines have been written with particular thought to those who may be unfamiliar with the space (e.g. people hiring a room for the first time), but may also be of some benefit to those who use the space regularly. If you feel unsafe at any time in the Cathedral please contact a member of staff immediately. Likewise, should you feel a hazard has not been adequately addressed we welcome constructive feedback and suggestions.
All who use this space are reminded that
- The Cathedral is a place of worship and as such there is an expectation of appropriate behaviour
- Children are welcome in this space but must be under the supervision of a responsible adult
- The Cathedral has many groups that use its space, it is incumbent for all to behave respectfully and leave rooms as they should wish to find them
- If a hazard (e.g. spilt water) arises, please tend to it immediately or draw the staff’s attention to it

+ Guidelines for School tours
This risk assessment is provided to assist school groups with planning their visit to Wellington Cathedral of St Paul. It is strongly recommended that the member of staff organising the trip pays an initial visit to the Cathedral in order to carry out their own risk assessment, which can include the journey to and from the Cathedral. Before the tours begin a safety briefing will be given by the leader. This will include:
- Expectations of behaviour – Reminder of place of worship
- Potential hazards to look out for
- Instructions to hold handrails where provided, and to remain quiet and calm
- No running
- Staying as a group
- Reminders of these will be given during the tour at appropriate moments.
