Gargoyles and Chimera on the outside of the building depict birds, animals and people, cast in concrete by Wellington sculptor J A McCready. A gargoyle is a carved figure on the outside of buildings that works as a waterspout, while Chimera are also carved figures but are ornamental only. Some of the people are said to be well known Wellington personalities of the time, including Bishop Baines.
