Tidings
With yuletide expressions both traditional and contemporary, this CD from the choir of Wellington Cathedral of St Paul, Wellington, New Zealand, explores a vast musical landscape. Nestled snugly among perennial carol favorites are works by 20th-century British choral masters, luminous modern American classics, and recently composed works by New Zealand composers Andrew Baldwin and Geoffrey Coker. Glorious cathedral acoustics complement solid foundations provided by organ and brass. Michael Fulcher directs the choir; Richard Apperley plays most of the accompaniments; Thomas Gaynor, organ scholar, accompanies “Once in Royal David’s City.”
Copies are available for NZ$20 from the cathedral shop, and online at the organism online store.
The Service of Shadows
Music for Good Friday and Passiontide
The Service of Shadows is a service held on Good Friday in the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul. This recording captures the seven Kyries sung at this service as well as other music for Good Friday and Passiontide. The choir is directed by Michael Fulcher and accompanied by organist Max Kenworthy, former Assistant Director of Music.
Music featured includes Kyries from the masses of Kiwi composers Andrew Baldwin and Katherine Dienes as well as those of Palestrina, Mathias, Fauré and Langlais, plus the beautiful Requiem of Maurice Duruflé. Other music includes the Howells Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in B minor, and music by Kenneth Leighton.
Award-winning young Kiwi composer Andrew Baldwin was our Composer-in-Residence at the Cathedral. We are particularly proud to present the first recordings of Andrew Baldwin’s settings of “O vos omnes” and his Responses of the office of Evensong.
Copies are available for NZ$15 from the cathedral shop, and online at the organism online store.
