Music in the Cathedral

The Wellington Cathedral of St Paul hosts frequent state services and events. Standing in the Parliamentary precinct the Cathedral is a visible symbol of the Anglican Church in New Zealand. The music and liturgy we provide is an important part of this function of the Cathedral.

The Cathedral currently has three highly-trained choirs, a young and enthusiastic music staff, and an ever-expanding reputation for musical excellence. The Cathedral is enriching in a unique way the spiritual, musical and cultural life of both city and nation.

Lecture / Recital: The Organist as Preacher (Rick Erickson)

Wednesday 15 May, 5.30 - 6.30pm
Entry by koha

A conversation/demonstration on improvisation and its relation to text.

Rick Erickson, a native of northern Wisconsin, serves as Cantor Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, New York, a post he has held since 1992. In that role he also directs the Bach Vespers series and oversees the musical life of the parish. As organist Erickson has appeared in the United States, Germany and Sweden as recitalist, hymn festival leader, and lecturer. He has performed for conventions of the American Guild of Organists, the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians and the Pastoral Musicians Association, among others. A noted hymn improviser, Erickson has recorded for Naxos, JVrecordings, and Augsburg Fortress. The New Yorker has hailed his playing as “exemplary Bach.” Holding degrees from the University of Wisconsin, Superior, and the Eastman School of Music, from which he also holds the Performer’s Certificate, his teachers have included Lucile Hammill Webb, Russell Saunders, David Craighead and Gerre Hancock in improvisation. Mr. Erickson has recently been appointed Music Director of the Boulder Bach Festival in Colorado.

While in New Zealand Rick is giving a TGIF recital on Friday 17th May, leading the Bach Cantata Vespers service at St Paul's Lutheran on Saturday 18th and is guest organist for Divine Worship at the Lutheran Church on Sunday 19th.

This lecture is sponsored by the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul, St Paul's Lutheran Church Wellington and ANZCO (Australian and New Zealand College of Organists).

Choir recordings

The most recent cathedral choir recording, 'Tidings', is a CD featuring music for Christmas. Nestled snugly among perennial carol favorites are works by 20th-century British choral masters, luminous modern American classics, and recently composed works by New Zealand composers Andrew Baldwin and Geoffrey Coker.

The disc is available for NZ$20 from the cathedral shop, and online at the organism online store.
